Bookworms: Endangered Species?

A recent poll by the Associated Press revealed that 1 in 4 Americans read no books last year. None.

Can this be right? If it is, what the hell are we all coming to?!
I think this year I will hit the 10+ mark. (What with all of the Harry Potter rereading and such.) David will probably surpass me by at least 5 books to hit the 15+ mark! I just can't believe that one quarter of Americans haven't read a single book in a year! I think I agree with the article that the internet and TV are partially to blame for distracting those with a little free time. But then again, it's the people themselves who aren't cruising Amazon.com, or for goodness sakes the damn library!, looking for a book of interest. COME ON!

Please have mercy on me and tell me that you have read a book. Any book. Trashy bodice ripping romance novel? Great! (The trashier the better, in my opinion!) Dark mystery full of twists and turns? Perfect. Or perhaps a how to? Kids fictional boy wizard? Self improvement? The Bible?

Throw me a bone!

Here it is. I've read so many I can't count. I've started reading really good, and short, kids fiction from Emily's and Michael's school library. They are really enjoyable and I'm able to finish them in a day or two. I've most of HP twice and some sections 4 and 5 times....trying to get all that stuff I missed the first time. I've also listened to it on cd. If you haven't ever listened to them, they are well worth the money. Currently reading James Patterson's Beach Road. It is really good.

I kind of throw the curve on the average books read by adults.

So far we are on chapter 16 of the new Harry. Adam and I read Eragon and I've read countless "kid" books to Karen. Nothing for myself, so kinda slow reading doing a chapter a night. Adam reads a lot for only being 9. Walt said he loves it when his kids cry cause we don't get them read to (in a good way mind you). We try to do it every night.

I tend to read a lot more during the summer, but sadly, other than the 7 HP books and a few snippits from pregnancy books, I haven't really picked up much more this summer. Usually, I have several trashy romance novels to read while laying out, but somehow I seem to not get to do either one of those things much anymore. I used to at least read People magazine from cover to cover every week, but even that slipped by the wayside. So, it's just the ocassional catalog that I browse through. pretty sad, really. there are lots of great books I know I'm missing out on. . .

PS well, those are the ones for myself; Dellaina & I read at least every night if not some during the day, too, so there is that at least.

Megs- I have read a couple this year thanks to Rusty's mom who loaned them to me. Then after those I started re-reading A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffett.

Bodice rippers. Guilty as charged.

And Harry.

And now...I'm actually reading (gasp!) Jane Austen!
